Binge-eating disorder, often shortened to BED, is a serious but treatable eating disorder. It involves recurring episodes of eating an unusually large amount of food while feeling unable to stop or control what is happening. These episodes are usually followed by significant distress, shame or guilt. Unlike bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder does not involve the regular use of compensatory behaviours such as self-induced vomiting, fasting, laxative misuse or excessive exercise.
